May 3: Depart the US
May 4: Arrive Tunis, and transfer to Hotel Africa.
May 5: Tunis area sightseeing
May 6: Tunis - Nabeul - Hammamet: After breakfast we depart for the train station and embark on a 1 hour, 20 minute train ride to Nabeul, the pottery capital of Tunisia. Then on to Hammamet, which was originally known for its large number of hammams (traditional Moorish public bathhouses).
May 7: Hammamet – Sousse – El Jem – Kairouan: Drive to El Jem, where the Roman amphitheater is the main attraction and one of Tunisia’s most visited sites.
May 8: Kairouan – Sebeitla – Tozeur: We'll visit of the Kairouan Islamic monuments, including the Great Mosque of Sidi Okba. After lunch, we’ll visit the Sbeitla Roman ruins, which boast one of the best-preserved complexes of Forum temples in the country. Then we’re off to Tozeur, which is one of the most popular places in the south region. It is an interesting old town with a great setting overlooking an enormous palmeraie.
May 9: Tozeur – Chebika – Tamerza – Mides – Tozeur: Fun day today! We first transfer to Metlaoui by 4WD and embark on an excursion to the Canyon of Selja by the Lezard Rouge train. We then continue to the Mountainous Oases.
May 10: Tozeur – Douz – Matmata – Ksar Ghilane: 4WDs, camel rides, oases, and more await us today. Fun!
May 11: Ksar Ghilaine – Chenini – Medenine – Ksar Haddada – Jerba: In our 4WD vehicles, we head off to Tataounie where we will visit the Berber Ksours. The ksour (plural of ksar) are the North African strengthened villages that are found throughout North Africa.
May 12: Jerba Island sightseeing: Jerba is well known for its beautiful landscapes and different cultures. A beautiful place to relax and explore.
May 13: Jerba: free day.
May 14: Jerba – Tunis – Dougga – Tabarka: This morning we'll fly to Tunis, and then hop on our bus to head through the mountains to Dougga for lunch. Next, we visit the great Roman ruins of Dougga. Then off to the northwest coast and the town of Tabarka (lots of French spoken here).
May 15: Tabarka – Bulla Regia – Tabarka: Today we'll enjoy a sightseeing tour of the Tabarka fortress. Following lunch, we'll transfer to the famous Roman ruins of Bulla Regia.
May 16: Tabarka – Ain Draham – Tunis: En route back to Tunis, we'll stop in a beautiful area called Ain Draham to enjoy a walk through the countryside followed by a picnic lunch.
May 17: Tunis: Today we'll visit Bardo and its National Museum. It is located in the palace of the former Bey of Tunis (the provincial governor of the Ottoman Empire). The Bardo Museum houses the largest collection of Roman and Byzantine mosaics in the world!
May 18: Return to the US or continue on our optional extension to Malta and Sicily.
