Why Use a Travel Agent?

There are a few questions I get asked a lot during an average work week. One is, "Why do airline fares vary so widely?" Another is, "When is it cheapest to fly?" But more and more I get asked this gem: "Why should I use a travel agent?"

Frankly, it's an interesting question. I think -- and I hope I don't offend anyone here -- that it really depends on what you want to do. Looking for a quick comparison on air fares and itineraries for a domestic flight? Then I think it's perfectly fine to take a gander online.

But if you want expert advice -- a travel consultant -- then I think you should use a travel agent. And I'm not just saying that because I am one. I'm saying it because I firmly believe it's true.

A recent article on CNN.com highlighted people's dissatisfaction with their online experience. They've been burned by hidden fees, properties that don't look like their online photos, and the list goes on. A travel agent is someone who is in your corner when something goes wrong, and someone who's there to share the excitement and provide experienced guidance about your travel dreams.

And it's really a thrill to get a thank-you note or a picture or a postcard from a client who had a great experience because of something I helped them plan. I want to share all the fun of travel -- and I'll be there if you ever get stranded.
